What is Pentecostal?
We're not big on labels but we are big on whatever God wants to do, especially being open to the Holy Spirit and being led by Him.
We identify with the name Pentecostal because it is a constant reminder for us that God fulfills his promises. God chose to send the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost to begin the church which Jesus promised that He would build (Matt 16: 13 - 22).
It was originally a Jewish festival known as Shavuot which means "weeks" as it occurs 7 weeks after the Passover festival. The Greek word for this holiday is Pentecost which means 50th because Shavout happens 50 days after the Passover.
Jesus promised his disciples that the Holy Spirit would come soon after he had ascended into heaven. On Pentecost day, the Holy Spirit came and met with these group of believers in a very special way. Since that time, we believe His Spirit is still active here on earth, even now, helping us to live lives that glorify God and empowering us to serve God in the way that He desires.
When some people hear the words "pentecostal church" they may automatically think that during meetings people will be seen falling or rolling on the ground and acting in very odd ways.
The Holy Spirit will never force someone to do something they are not open to and we do not believe in dramatizing or performing crazy actions to make it look like the Holy Spirit is at work.
We believe that God meets with us in unique and powerful ways and it can look different for different people.
